Software conquers Open Transport
New module is thirteen times faster and leaves
eMerge 1.5 crash proof
SAN FRANCISCO. January 6, 1998. When system software goes wrong
theres usually little you can do but sit back and watch your
application crash, unless youre a developer at Galleon Software
and know more about the Internet than any one person has a right
was the problem some customers were having with eMerge, Galleon
Softwares bulk e-mail application for the Macintosh. Things
would be going great, says Scott Appleton, Galleons
Internet specialist, then wed suddenly crash, deep in
the guts of Open Transport.
problem was eventually narrowed down to a module called the Domain
Name Resolver (DNR) which translates e-mail addresses into their
numeric equivalent. Even with a 28.8K modem, eMerge can send
out over 3000 messages an hour directly to each recipients
mail server, says Appleton. And Apples DNR just
couldnt handle what we were asking it to do.
as Scott set about writing his own DNR, the rest of the development
team made sure that such crashes would have as little impact as
possible. Their solution was to have eMerge quickly save the status
of each message whenever a message is sent. In this way, now even
if the power fails, you always know which recipients have received
a message and which have not.
in its final beta, eMerge 1.5 has even surprised its developers.
Not only is the new DNR entirely reliable, it resolves Internet
addresses more than thirteen times faster than the DNR in Open Transport.
But whats even more important, rewriting Apples DNR
and tracking the status of messages has left eMerge 1.5 essentially
crash proof. More and more people are doing serious business
on the Internet, says Colin Biggin, the president of Galleon
Software, and they are demanding tools that they can depend
addition to the most powerful mailing engine available for the Macintosh,
eMerge also lets you customize your messages automatically for everyone
on your mailing list. eMerge has built-in tools to create lists
of names, e-mail addresses, and other variables. And with eMerge
1.5 you can now attach any number of files to the messages you send.
